Background

Over the past years, participating in various sports-related projects, we have conducted research and developed solutions in the areas of machine learning (ML) and computer vision (CV) to automate the analysis of athletes' actions, the course of games, and competition results in order to obtain, accumulate, and use statistic data to gain competitive advantages for athletes.

As a rule, the data sources were various embedded or wearable sensors, as well as video data from cameras.

We will not go into the details of this or that project here in the description, brag about our achievements and try to raise their significance, because this direction is extremely innovative, absolutely not trivial and rapidly developing. We will list only a standard, well-known set of challenges facing engineers working in this direction. But with great pleasure we will discuss the possibility of working together in similar projects.

Challenges

Detection of objects in video data, such as balls, players, field boundaries, etc
Based on video data or data from sensors such as accelerometer, gyroscope, pedometer, detecting events such as strikes, bounces, movement, jumps, swings, etc
Classification of events that have been defined. For example, the correlation of a hit to a particular type
Detection the numerical characteristics of events, such as speed, distance, quantity, energy, etc
Optimization of algorithms to obtain acceptable computational performance of systems, for example, for operation of the real-time algorithms

Value Delivered

Our developments at the moment are already used in several commercial products, as well as ongoing research in several prototypes.

Approach and Technical Info

The amount of work in these projects varies, as a rule, it takes several months of R&D (research and development) work of a specialist team, formed depending on the goals of the project and the resources that can be allocated to the project.

Usually in the project involved - PhD consultant or several, project manager, data scientist or several, computer vision engineer or several, data mining assistant or several.

We use C++, Python, OpenCV, NumPy, Pandas, Tensorflow, Keras, Pytorch and other related technologies, and we develop many algorithms from scratch.

Work in this direction continues, we gain new and new experience, open new and new horizons, attract the best Ukrainian scientists and developers to our projects.
